What is a Transfer Case?
A transfer case is a component of four-wheel drive (4WD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles that transfer power from the engine to the front and rear axles. The transfer case is located between the engine and the transmission.
The transfer case also includes a differential, which allows each axle to rotate at different speeds. Proper maintenance of the transfer case ensures that the 4WD or AWD system works properly when you need it most. Most 4x4 and AWD vehicles have a two-speed transfer case. It allows the driver to select between "high range" and "low range."
